Location: Mongolia is located in the center of Asia bordered by Russia to the North and China to the South.

Total Area: 1,564,116 sq.km

  • Mongolia is the 8th largest country in Asia and 19th largest in the world.
  • Mongolia is three times larger than France and seventeen times larger than Hungary.

Average altitude: 1580 meters above sea level.

Capital city: Ulaanbaatar, 1350 meters above sea level.

  • Mongolia has the lowest population density in the world. The population is relatively young, with an average age of 28, with 30 percent of the population under the age of 14 and 3.8 percent over the age of 65.

    GEOGRAPHICAL ZONE

    Landscape: Mountains dominate two-thirds of the country, nearly 8% of the territory is covered by forest and most of the landscape is wide open grasslands, steppes and deserts. 

    Longest River: Orkhon river, 1124 km
    Largest Lake: Uvs Lake by surface area, 3350 km2; Khuvsgul Lake by volume, 480.7 km3 
    Mountains: There are three main mountain ranges:

    • Altai Mountains
    • Khangai Mountains
    • Khentii Mountains

    Forest area: 7% of total area

    WILDLIFE OF MONGOLIA

    Mongolia is a paradise for animal watchers. The country has over 449 species of birds, 139 species of mammals, 76 species of fish, 22 species of reptiles and 6 species of amphibians. Mongolia is home to a number of rare species of animals, such as:

    • Snow leopard;
    • Wild sheep or Argali;
    • Siberian musk deer;
    • Snowcock;
    • Cinereous vulture;

    Dinosaur eggs: The largest number of dinosaur egg deposits in the world is in Mongolia. Hundreds of almost 10-15 cm long fossilized eggs were found here.

    Education: Mongolia has a high literacy rate, consistently rated around 98%.
    Climate:  Dry continental climate.

    • The coldest month is January and the temperature falls anywhere from -25°C to -40°C.
    • The hottest month is July and the temperature rises anywhere between 20°C to 30°C.

    Sunshine: A remarkably sunny country. Mongolia is known as the "Land of the Eternal Blue Sky", because it has over 250 sunny days a year.

    Languages: The official language of Mongolia is Mongolian, and is spoken by 95% of the population. 

    Religion: 47% Buddhists, 8% Muslims, 3% Shamans, 2% Christians, 39% atheists.

    Political system of Mongolia: Parliamentary Democratic country.

    Oil, coal, copper, molybdenum, tungsten, phosphates, tin, nickel, zinc, wolfram, fluorspar, gold, silver, iron and phosphate.

    Mongolia is one of the 29 resource-rich developing countries and has 10% of all the coal reserves in the world.

    Number of Livestock: 

    • Sheeps – 30 mln, 10th in the world in the Number of Sheep.
    • Goats – 27.7 mln, the world’s second largest producer of raw cashmere, producing over 25 percent of world supply, after China.
    • Horses – 4.1 mln, 6th in the world in the Number of Horse.
    • Camels – 0.47 mln, 1st in the world in the Number of Two-humped Camels.
    • Cattles – 4.7 mln.
